Tree Services in Boston
TCIA-Accredited, Preservation-First Care for Boston’s Urban Trees
Boston tree care requires more than deciding where to cut. Mature canopies, nearby buildings, public travel areas, gardens, hardscapes, and limited access all shape the right course of action. We evaluate the entire site before recommending pruning, plant health care, structural support, planting, or removal.
Our credentialed arborists assess decay, deadwood, disease symptoms, structural defects, root-zone conditions, clearance, lean, and nearby targets. We explain which concerns need prompt attention, which may respond to planned care, and which can be monitored.

Preservation Comes Before Removal
We treat mature trees as long-term landscape assets. Since 2007, our work has centered on preservation, plant health, and stewardship of the urban canopy. Removal may be appropriate when decline or structural risk can’t be responsibly managed, but it isn’t our default recommendation.
Before advising removal, we consider the tree’s biological condition, structural defects, surrounding targets, and available mitigation options. Depending on the assessment, fine pruning, soil amendments, targeted treatments, cabling, bracing, or continued monitoring may offer a responsible alternative.
We explain the reasoning behind each recommendation in plain language. You’ll understand which concerns are urgent, which work can be planned, and what to expect in terms of cost, timing, and service.
Science-Based Arboriculture With Shared Accountability
Barrett Tree Service East is an employee-owned, TCIA Accredited Tree Care Company. Because our team members share ownership in the results, each project reflects a collective commitment to careful work and long-term landscape health. Continuing education keeps our practices aligned with current arboricultural methods.
TCIA Accreditation includes independent review of safety, training, ethical business practices, and professional standards. Certified Tree Care Safety Professionals also guide job planning and crew safety. These qualifications are especially important on dense urban sites near buildings, vehicles, pedestrians, fences, patios, and valued plantings.
Boston Tree Permits & Site Coordination
Boston’s tree-canopy ordinance requires a Tree Permit before a Significant Tree covered by the ordinance is removed from private property. An application may need to identify the tree’s location, species, diameter at breast height, proposed removal, and replacement plans. The ordinance also addresses replacement trees or payments, waivers, and emergency exceptions for trees that present an immediate health or safety hazard.
These requirements don’t apply identically to every tree or project. Work involving public shade trees, streets, utilities, construction zones, or neighboring properties may require separate approvals and additional site protection. Property owners should confirm current requirements with the appropriate City of Boston officials.
We’re familiar with Massachusetts municipal tree requirements and the demands of complex urban and public landscapes, including the Emerald Necklace and Boston Public Garden. When regulations may affect the work, we identify those considerations early so they can be addressed before service begins.
Careful Planning From Assessment Through Cleanup
During the site visit, we examine the tree and identify access limitations, nearby structures, driveways, gardens, hardscapes, pedestrian activity, and equipment needs. We walk the property with you, describe the recommended work, and discuss reasonable alternatives before a crew begins.
For pruning and removal, we plan cuts, equipment movement, rigging, and material handling around the property. Where space is limited, controlled lowering and staged handling can reduce unnecessary impact on lawns, fences, patios, gardens, and buildings. Our crews coordinate each phase, communicate proactively, and leave the work area clean and orderly.
Schedule an Arborist Consultation for Your Boston Property
Hanging branches, visible decay, disease symptoms, a new lean, storm damage, disturbed roots, or interference with a building or access route are all reasons to request an evaluation. Our arborists can assess the tree’s condition, identify potential safety concerns, and explain preservation or removal options.
We serve residential and commercial properties throughout Boston and the Greater Boston area from our operations in Newton and Medford. Whether you need planned maintenance, plant health care, or an assessment of a hazardous condition, you’ll receive a clear recommendation grounded in the tree and its surroundings.
