Meet the Barrett Tree East Team
Behind every healthy tree and well-cared-for landscape is a team that knows what to look for and what to do next. Barrett Tree Service East brings together experienced tree care and plant health professionals, including ISA Certified Arborists, Board Certified Master Arborists, and Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ) arborists.
From diagnosing concerns to developing thoughtful, long-term care recommendations, our team is here to help Greater Boston homeowners make confident decisions about the landscapes they value.
Meet the Barrett Tree East Team
Arborist Representatives
Trumbull Barrett
Trumbull founded the company in 2007 after working in Western Massachusetts, Chicago and Brooklyn. Trumbull’s love of trees started early with walks through the woods with his dad, who was a forester by training and ran a lumber mill. Trumbull started out in the tree care industry after getting a Masters degree in Engineering, joining his brother’s tree care company in 2000. His favorite thing outside of work is to go skiing, biking, swimming, or pretty much anything with his kids.
Trumbull is a Massachusetts Certified Arborist, ISA Certified Arborist and Licensed Applicator.
Alden Johnson
Alden was BTSE’s first employee before leaving in 2008 to attend law school. Thankfully for all of us, he came to his senses and rejoined the company full-time in 2009 as a crew leader, Arborist, and now is the Chief Executive Officer. In his spare time, Alden wrangles his growing family in Medford and keeps a close eye on his garden.
Alden is a Massachusetts Certified Arborist, ISA Certified Arborist, Certified Tree Care Safety Professional and Licensed Applicator.
Keith Bernard
Keith earned his Bachelor of Science in Forestry at Colorado State University and worked with trees out west before returning east in 2002. An ISA board certified Master Arborist, Keith leads our team of client-facing arborists. He is passionate about Arboriculture and trees in general- if you talk to him you will discover this quickly. He loves dogs, Motorcycles, Iron Maiden, the color purple, and playing the banjo- preferably to his favorite audience, his children.
Marc Hansen
Marc joined the BTSE team in September 2018. As a graduate of Stockbridge School of Agriculture and past president of the Mass Arborist Association, Marc is a valuable resource for his residential and commercial clients all over the greater Boston Area. A long-time resident of Melrose, his favorite tree is the Japanese Stewartia. Outside of work Marc enjoys spending time with his two daughters and visiting his home state of Maine.
Nathan Andac
Nate arrived at Barrett Tree Service East in 2016 in pursuit of a greener path in life. After graduating with a BS in Business Management from the Manning School of Business, and an early career in the restaurant industry, he found Arboriculture to be an equally exciting and enticing profession. When Nate is not engaging with folks about their landscape projects and thinking about trees, he is often found walking his dog around the streets of Cambridge, tinkering in the kitchen, or taking an impromptu trip somewhere new and unexpected.
Nicole Semeraro
Nicole's roots are in horticulture ranging from urban parks and green roof maintenance to permaculture. She graduated from Colby-Sawyer College with a degree in Environmental Studies with a focus in Sustainability. She holds certifications through ISA (Certified Arborist), MAA (Massachusetts Certified Arborist - MCA), and MNLA (Massachusetts Certified Horticulturist - MCH). Nicole now focuses on the client-facing side of tree care and represents BTSE in the Metro West. When not inspecting and admiring the trees, she spends her time cooking, biking, practicing yoga, and hanging out with her cat, Roo.
Ryan Andrews
Ryan cut his arboricultural chops in the mid-Atlantic residential market for several years, then moved up to Connecticut in the mid-2000s. He first started up in the Boston area in 2011, climbing big trees with ease before shifting into an Arborist role here at BTSE. Ryan spends time outside of work chasing his boys around the playgrounds wishing they would just use some safety equipment when climbing the trees.
Hendrik Wenning
Hendrik’s green industry journey began in Germany with a formal landscaping apprenticeship. He quickly scaled greater heights by transitioning into arboriculture, earning his European Tree Worker certification and Tree Risk Assessment Qualification while working across Germany as a freelance contract climber. In 2017, Hendrik joined the Barrett family, and he’s stubbornly refused to leave ever since. When he isn’t managing trees, Hendrik can usually be found taxiing his child to various activities and fiercely defending his exceptionally high handicap on the golf course.
Greg Thompson
Greg studied Wildlife Ecology at UMass Amherst, acquiring his degree in 2013. After several years of conservation fieldwork out west, Greg returned to his New England roots in 2021, shifting his focus to the tree care industry. Starting his career at Barrett Tree Service East as a Plant Health Care technician, Greg is now an ISA and MCA certified arborist who represents Barrett for clients in the Newton. Outside of work, Greg enjoys metal detecting, birding and spending time with family and friends.
Cody Holt
Cody earned his bachelor’s degree in Forest Management and Wildland Fire Sciences at Colorado State University. He broadened his experience while working as a professional forester for the Forest Service across nine states, from New Hampshire to Oregon, before returning to the Northeast to join Barrett Tree Service East. He has since turned his focus to tree planting and preservation, and become an ISA and Massachusetts Certified Arborist. In his free time, Cody enjoys hiking, snowboarding, and playing golf.
Bill Godin
Bill is a Stockbridge School of Agriculture graduate with wide experience in landscape processes and design, and the human experience within it. An ISA and Massachusetts Certified Arborist, Bill is BTSEs arborist for clients in Arlington and Lexington. When not looking at trees he enjoys spending time with his family, playing Saxophone, and puttering around the garden.
Plant Health Care
Phil Perron
Phil is a Vermonter through and through, having grown up in northern Vermont and then earning a degree in Forestry from the University of Vermont. He first cared for trees in the Boston area in 2002, and since joining BTSE has developed our plant health care program. His favorite tree is a Sugar Maple, and because he grew up somewhere near Canada, his favorite thing to eat is maple syrup. On the weekends he can be found tinkering with his syrup operation, or spending time at the family farm.
Dave Whisple
Dave leads our plant health care Team in Newton. He has a degree in Civil Engineering and came to BTSE a decade ago after several years working in construction project management. He is an Arborist certified by both the Massachusetts Arborists and the International Society of Arboriculture and is also certified hilarious. He will not lay claim to this but he’s an excellent dancer, and is a force on the basketball court.
Bethany Todd
Dylan Penkethman
Dylan was raised on the South Shore of Massachusetts, and then spent much of his early adulthood exploring and guiding others through the great forests and National Parks of the Western US. Eventually, he realized that his love of trees could translate to a rewarding career in arboriculture - and in the 6 years he has spent with BTSE, Dylan has been certified by both the MCA and ISA, works as a climbing arborist and PHC technician, and now Plant Health Care manager. When he is not out caring for clients' properties Dylan enjoys climbing, cooking, and both playing and seeing live music.
Robbie Barwick
Robbie was born and raised in South Florida. He attended an Environmental Studies academy in high school and continued this focus in college where he earned a B.S. in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation. After working as an environmental consultant, he joined Barrett Tree Service in 2021 as a Plant Health Care technician focusing on IPM. He is a Massachusetts Certified Arborist and holds ISA certifications as well as a Commercial Applicator License. He enjoys cheerful birdwatching, sad music, and remarkable food.
General Tree Care
Brendan Conaway
Brendan is our General Tree Care Director here at Barrett Tree Service East. He came on board in 2008 after earning his Bachelor's Degree from SUNY-ESF in Syracuse and quickly became the embodiment of our core values: steadfast, motivated, passionate, resourceful and positive. BTSE crews and clients who have a chance to work with Brendan uniformly comment on his patience, technical expertise, and willingness to tackle whatever challenges come his way.
After work, he can often be found doing projects on his home under the watchful eye of his kids.
